This conference builds on the highly successful previous meetings, held in Bonn (2003, organized by Hydro), Manchester (2000, Alcan), Antwerp (1997, Hoogovens-Corus), bringing together industry, academia and research institutions. It has become recognized as the key event focusing on understanding the technology and current issues of aluminium surface critical products across all market sectors of aluminium and its alloys.

Existing and developing aspects of surface characterization, processing effects and product performance are within the scope of the symposium. Fields of interest include wet chemical processing, plasma technologies, rolling and extrusion processes, lubrication interactions, joining processes (FSW, laser, brazing), material deformation effects, corrosion and protection mechanisms and adhesion durability of products in applications as diverse as aerospace, automotive, architecture, electronics, lithography, packaging, vacuum systems and nanotechnology. In addition, the impact of process and product developments on the environment will be addressed.

The aluminium companies are well represented, as are surface treatment suppliers, industrial end users, instrument manufacturers and researchers from the international scientific community. The majority of the oral and poster papers will be published, after peer review, in the Symposium Proceedings.
